The property

The farm is in the southeastern part of the Designation, bordering Umbria and Lake Trasimeno. It extends for 200 hectares over 5 beautiful hills. The landscape is a characteristic alternation vineyards, olive groves and arable land. Only the highest areas of these 5 hills are planted with vineyards, for a total of 103 hectares.

The Tenuta Trerose is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful wineries in the Vino Nobile Designation for its hills, topography and landscape; it is not only rich from a winemaking point of view, but it is also of great historical and landscape interest.

Soils and climate

In prehistoric times (Quaternary period) these lands were inhabited by exotic animals and covered with dense savannah, with a typically hot, dry climate in a mixed wooded environment. Evidence of this can be found in the numerous fossils of African animals found in the area: hippopotamuses, rhinoceroses, elephants or rather mammoths (a whole one was found during a dig in the vineyard in front of the cellar). All of these are preserved in the Farneta Museum.

These valleys full of water dried up through the millennia, then these soils rich in SAND (sandstone) and CLAY (rich in salt) were enriched with a precious SILT deposit.

Here, the cold continental CLIMATE of inland Tuscany encounters the environment of Lake Trasimeno, which exercises a positive influence over it to mitigate its harshness.

On these SOILS and with this particular MICROCLIMATE, the Prugnolo biotype of Sangiovese ripens later and gives wines that stand out for their particular softness and richness of flavour. 

The designation

The Vino Nobile di Montepulciano was the first Italian DOC. It is a small but solid designation, especially due to certain historic markets (such as Switzerland and Germany). It is an area that has recently aroused growing interest for its great vinegrowing and winemaking value.

In our opinion, Vino Nobile can show a more modern and innovative side of Tuscany, without losing elegance and character.

Our Estate is perfectly placed in this context, as it lends itself particularly well to a unique work of viticultural selection due to its diversity of soils and exposures.
